* Justin has been doing a crash course in web development and made a software version of the game "Set." He went through Freecodecamp.org and took HTML and CSS. He used to consider Javascript voodoo, but now has a good grasp on it. His next challenge is hosting this project to serve as his portfolio. He's considering using a server to store data/options/scores.

* Lewis has been finishing summer harvests before a killing frost, and preparing new crops for the cooler weather. He collected 93 leafbags as of this meeting for his composting operation, with a goal of more than 300. He finished a rainbarrel for his friend's garden, and has been researching low-tech methane collection for cooking, heating, etc.
 +
 +
* Mark has been interested in bacteria development, and using bacteria to eat human garbage. He has been working with several programming languages recently, including Prologue and Forth, and discussed its use.
 +
 +
* Scott H(1) worked at the model train club show, and had a big learn to solder table. They had overlapping sessions all day on Saturday, kids from 6yrs old to adults at 81 learned to solder. They had learning kits and had kids make figurines with the kits. He ordered more solder, since Splatspace was running out. He reminded people to use the appropriate diameter solder for their projects -- not too thin solder for thicker applications. He ordered a $350 digital soldering station, with a soldering pencil and desoldering station all in one. He's going to be working on another show for the woodshop, and has been considering moving a shelf into the hallway to use for hardware.
 +
 +
* Tom and Brandon have been working on their obligate bactovore bacteria, to be used as an alternative to antibiotics. They've been growing it on laboratory grown e-coli, and want to try it out on wild strains of pathogenic bacteria. In the spring, Tom took some chicken shit from Lewis, and has been working on identifying them. Tom will try to feed some of this bacteria to his predator bacteria this weekend. He doesn't know what his bacteria is capable of yet. A discussion of phage therapy and antibiotic dominance follows.
 +
 +
* Blake put 2500 miles on his Rav 4. He's been redoing some rooms in his house, and has been painting. He noticed a massive paint shortage. Blake started cold composting, and wants to experiment using hot composting. He became more aware of how much produce waste was running through his house. He's also been trying to teach himself Python. He got a big book and didn't like it -- it was too introductory.

Special thanks (again!) to our anonymous benefactor for (earlier this year) donating $3000 through [https://www.fidelitycharitable.org/ Fidelity Charitable].  Your donation brought us 10 months closer to getting us to this point of having a healthy reserve!  Now we can start planning expenditures to help improve SplatSpace for our membership.  This was tremendously important and impactful support--thank you.

I've planned to soon for a while, though... :( Our past filings can be found by searching for "Durham Makerspace" at https://www.sosnc.gov/csl/search.  We have filed late previously without incident (so far).

Upcoming Events

note new calendar for 2021 External Outreach Events list

Recurring Events

Regular events carried from month to month.

Non-Recurring Events

Previous Minutes

  • Approved minutes from September 7th, 2021.

Recruitment / Retention / Fundraising

Member Attendance

63 Dues-paying (voting) members

Quorum = 16 members - Quorum not met

Notes from the Special Action Committee:

Consent Agenda

Old Business

Pinned Items

Permanent items of the Old Business section carried from month to month.

ToDo Action Items

(Items carried forward from previous meetings, but not up for discussion this month. Recorded here so we don't forget about them.)

  • Identify and maintain (online) lists of SMEs (subject matter experts) for each equipment or space. (No Update)
  • Website: on hold for a little while at the moment. Blake invites any interested people to join the project. The draft is currently up at https://master.d3vo4125o10qad.amplifyapp.com/index.html. Still needs some work. Wordpress and Stripe are not playing well. Ryan noted that the member self-management portion might be unnecessary, which would simplify the system.
  • Members are beginning to plan meetups and congregate--Ryan is planning to create and install room capacity placards in the work rooms for informational and safety purposes (supporting continuing COVID and social distancing safety, but also general shop safety). SplatSpace lease provides the total space capacity.

New Business

  • A reminder to members to be mindful to clean up the space after using it.

Officer Reports

President

Ryan ordered film for the resin printers. He wants to try to visit the space at least once a week. He applied Splatspace to Microsoft's nonprofit services, which includes use of Azure credit. He's making sure the offer is legitimate and that there are no catches. He came across a small firing kiln and potter's wheel and considered getting it a space.

Vice-President

Justin moved the laser cutters around and improved access. He's continued to consider soundproofing. He got the floorplan of the Durham library, including where the routers. His next goal for the cleanups is to figure out what is truly broken. He's also interested in cleaning up the craft corner.

Donations: Thank you to Blake, Graham, and Kunal, for your donations. You've kept us in the game!

Special thanks (again!) to our anonymous benefactor for (previously) donating $3000 through Fidelity Charitable. That donation brought us 10 months closer to funding our reserve, which we just accomplished! Now we can start planning expenditures to help improve SplatSpace for our membership. This was tremendously important and impactful support--thank you.

Pending: SplatSpace's Charitable Solicitation License Exemption filing was due May 15, 2021, with the NC Secretary of State. I haven't yet filed our renewal for 2021, though I plan to soon. Our past filings can be found by searching for "Durham Makerspace" at https://www.sosnc.gov/csl/search. We have filed late previously without incident (so far).
