* CY lives in Raleigh and does a lot of paint and chalk lettering. They are interested in making neon LED signs and are interested in using the laser cutter and learning how to solder.

Jonathon Powell: just moving to Durham from Raleigh into an apartment with no space. Software Engr. looking to work with the laser cutters and 3D-printers.

* Lewis has been working hard on shiitake logs from an accidental log delivery he had delivered. He offered a black walnut log that he has access to for any woodworkers. He's been working on a bootagen (a wooden mortar for grinding corn and hazelnuts).

Adam N: showed off a CNC house design

Tom R: talked about removing the mold in the basement area

* Adam has been working on experiments with Lora radio. He discovered R-node, a modem driver for Arduino, and ported it to Linux. You can use R-nodes as network adapters, so he's got rPi's pinging each other over the slow and low-bandwidth Lora radio. Theoretically this could stretch over several km. Adam is experimenting with SSH.
+
Ryan P: meeting with high-school makerspaces; learning how to use a CNC; built a couple BOEbot robot kits, and a DObot for the kids at the school he is teaching

* Ernesto got his Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Associate certification and spent the last month studying to get that. He is an apprectice at Max Potential and was invited to participate on a panel in Virginia, and did a hacking/vulnerability demo with virtual machines in front of an audience of students. He recently got a rPi and discussed the shortage. He hooked a waterproof temperature to his rPi and used it to measure his aquarium. He plans to improve his project housing in the next month.
+
C Y: learned how to use the Glowforge laser last week; playing with acrylic designs to make things; wants to learn how to solder

* Joshua has been working on the idea of building a contrabass trombone out of a mix of parts, but hasn't dived too deep into it yet. He stopped by the Tuba Exchange in December. A new one can cost many thousands of dollars.
+
Mark C: using python to learn ...

* Justin has been on a grind to teach himself webscript and java development. He's waiting to find out if he got accepted into a bootcamp. He's been doing coding challenges recently. Justin described a video by a youtuber Mathaloger about "vortex math." He challenged viewers to create a web app to show data calculated by his system. Justin made a handy svg vortex math generator for easy lasercutting. He is getting comfortable with javascript and has been considering making a 2d CAD program, and now has a leg up with his recent work with svg.

Pete S: described FPGAs as has been working on with the Triangle Embedded Interest Group (https://triembed.org/), prototypes of board to be available for education; to learn more contact Pete: pete@soper.us

* Scott has been busy renovated parts of his house. He's been working on material for the upcoming Raspberry Jam and wants to put together some projects to celebrate Pi Day. He suggested the Ham fest as a way to sell/offload some material from the boneyard.
+
Scott H: talked about his musical playing and concerts coming up - saxophone, hammered dulcimer, flute, handbells, and with a choir; arranged a special piece of music: Chase the Clouds Away from Chuck Mangione

* Blake has also been doing "some house stuff." He's been working on renovating his linen closet, and reflected on his love-hate relationship with MDF, and discussed how it's good for shelving. He's also been working on some guitars from the basement, needing still to cut a pickguard.
+
Jon V: back from moving to Fayetteville; worked on making game systems for persons with disabilities, including armor, etc., called Larping; contact Jon if you are interested: fivepillarslarp@gmail.com

* mentioned former Splatter Aurora who works at NASA, and Eli mentioned he is the electronics engineer for the group: they are working on an automated system to grow plants in space and harvest them; found that a Dremel-like tool works best; is working out the kinks of the concept prototype they have developed; if you are interested contact Eli at: eli@splatspace.org
 +
* has been growing tomatoes and peppers here at Splat, you can buy some for yourself -- see message in the Slack #public & #homesteading channels for details; will be holding a grafting workshop on the Saturday Science gathering Apr.15

 +
Blake M: worked on creating some SplatSpace keychains with the laser cutter using scraps; made a wooden box using the CNC machine
 +
Ryan Patridge

Eli has me imagining a solution using friction, tension, and a chain-like mechanism.  Like a garrote.  Then I realized the morbid appropriateness of garroting heads of lettuce.
 +
Eli Hornstein
 +
8:43 PM
 +
that was actually the second thing we tried, though the equally bad term I came up with was "noose"
 +
Eli Hornstein
 +
8:45 PM
 +
the amount of force to garrote a head of lettuce from its stalk with smooth wire was prohibitive, we thought about trying to have it spin or oscillate and abrade, like a wire saw used for cutting rock, but the mechanism again seemed pretty prohibitive

Eli H:

  • mentioned former Splatter Aurora who works at NASA, and Eli mentioned he is the electronics engineer for the group: they are working on an automated system to grow plants in space and harvest them; found that a Dremel-like tool works best; is working out the kinks of the concept prototype they have developed; if you are interested contact Eli at: eli@splatspace.org
  • has been growing tomatoes and peppers here at Splat, you can buy some for yourself -- see message in the Slack #public & #homesteading channels for details; will be holding a grafting workshop on the Saturday Science gathering Apr.15

Blake M: worked on creating some SplatSpace keychains with the laser cutter using scraps; made a wooden box using the CNC machine Ryan Patridge 8:40 PM Eli has me imagining a solution using friction, tension, and a chain-like mechanism. Like a garrote. Then I realized the morbid appropriateness of garroting heads of lettuce. Eli Hornstein 8:43 PM that was actually the second thing we tried, though the equally bad term I came up with was "noose" Eli Hornstein 8:45 PM the amount of force to garrote a head of lettuce from its stalk with smooth wire was prohibitive, we thought about trying to have it spin or oscillate and abrade, like a wire saw used for cutting rock, but the mechanism again seemed pretty prohibitive
