==Background==

This is a temporary page for information relating to curating electronic parts, supplies, and tools, focusing initially on those donated by the late Fred Ebeling.

===Plan===
+
=Background=
* Curate Fred's donation
+
This page is to support curation of electronic parts, supplies, and tools donated by the late Fred Ebeling with an eye towards managing existing and future resources at [http://splatspace.org Splatspace (Durham Makerspace)]. Fred was a consummate design engineer in the Triangle area. A tribute to Fred by mentee Praneet Athalye is available [https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/tribute-fred-ebeling-praneet-athalye-ph-d-lc here]. The coordinator of the curation project is [mailto:fe-project@soper.us Pete Soper].
* Generalize this process to other donated electronics (e.g. Andre's donation) while being careful not to mix unvetted components in with those known to be unused stock from a reliable vendor.
+
* Consider back-filling process to existing Splatspace inventory
+

==Implementation==
+
=Plan=
 +
* Initial labeling/cataloging of Fred's donation at the  [http://www.tridiybio.org/ Triangle DIYBio popup] [https://goo.gl/maps/Y7nnj9Ss58m  Map Here]. This is diagonally across the parking lot from Scrap Exchange at 24 Shoppers Lane, Durham, NC.
 +
* Arrange permanent storage. This will most likely involve swapping existing supplies out of the current Splatspace location or else splitting the collection between the current Splatspace location and temporary, sealed storage at a place TBD.
 +
* Plan and execute donations of parts to area makerspaces in need, for workshop kits, etc.
 +
* Deploy a decent database tool to allow the main and distributed collections highly available.

* August 12, 2017 10am to 6pm. Eleven participants. Labeling/Cataloging Session. A good start on infrastructure and process was made with many parts captured.
+
Note that the move of TriDIYBio from 25 to 24 Shoppers Street takes some time pressure off this work.
* August 13, 2017 2:30pm to 4:30pm.
+

* August 19, 2017 10am to late afternoon.
+
=Implementation=
* Other times TBD.

STATUS: This was a project started in 2017. Although some tools and supplies are at Splatspace the bulk is in storage. Contact Pete Soper for more details

Contents

Background

This page is to support curation of electronic parts, supplies, and tools donated by the late Fred Ebeling with an eye towards managing existing and future resources at Splatspace (Durham Makerspace). Fred was a consummate design engineer in the Triangle area. A tribute to Fred by mentee Praneet Athalye is available here. The coordinator of the curation project is Pete Soper.

Plan

  • Initial labeling/cataloging of Fred's donation at the Triangle DIYBio popup Map Here. This is diagonally across the parking lot from Scrap Exchange at 24 Shoppers Lane, Durham, NC.
  • Arrange permanent storage. This will most likely involve swapping existing supplies out of the current Splatspace location or else splitting the collection between the current Splatspace location and temporary, sealed storage at a place TBD.
  • Plan and execute donations of parts to area makerspaces in need, for workshop kits, etc.
  • Deploy a decent database tool to allow the main and distributed collections highly available.

Note that the move of TriDIYBio from 25 to 24 Shoppers Street takes some time pressure off this work.

Implementation

NOTE: This work is NOT happening at Splat Space, it's happening at RAD Lab (see details and pointer to Google Map above).

  • Saturday August 12, 2017 10am to 6pm. (Shannon, Martin, Peter R, Owen, Jennifer, Shaw, Sarah, Tony M, Jocelyn, Ben, Pete). Labeling/Cataloging Session. A good start on infrastructure and process was made with many parts captured.
  • Sunday August 13, 2017 2:30pm to 4:30pm. (Ryan, Pete). Pre-labeled all the wire and cable boxes.
  • Tuesday August 15, 2017 2:00pm to 6:00pm. (Jeremy, Pete). Put all the wire and cable boxes into the spreadsheets.
  • Thursday August 17, 2017 2pm-6pm. (Tony M, Pete). More boxes labeled, photographed, and entered into the spreadsheets. Also did a quick evaluation of the surface mount parts donated to Splat by Scrap Exchange. These are reels of parts designed to feed automated pick and place machines.
  • Saturday August 19, 2017 10am-4pm. (Shaw, Ryan, Martin, Sarah, Pete). Settled on Django as a framework for post-spreadsheet software. Pre-labeled all remaining boxes. Cataloged a key SMD collection and a few other boxes.
  • Tuesday August 23 3-5:30pm. (Tony M, Pete). Pulled everything into the one back room and tidied up before the DIYBio open house.
  • Thursday August 31, 2-5pm. (Shannon, Pete). Got old ("VT") Splatspace bookcase in to hold books (bottom) and light stuff (top). Prep for Saturday.
  • Saturday September 2, time 10am-4pm. (Pete). Made labels for all the books and additional ones for the empty parts drawer units that will hold items go go to the SplatSpace electronics bench area. Researched the Dallas Makerspace parts database system as a possible model. Decided to rotate remaining boxes of items through Pete's living room and finish initial labeling/cataloging while watching TV.

(tentative) Saturday September 30, time 10am-4pm. Task List

  • Label the books with QR Codes added to the book spreadsheet
  • Assemble obvious drawers of parts to go to SplatSpace.
  • Discuss specific needs and plans for distribution with invited area makerspace representatives and one or more SplatSpace board members?
