Organizing Our Space

Goal: A more organized, less cluttered, more fun to use space.

Process:

  • Capture ideas on how to organize the space
  • Identify components (furniture? shelves? other?) needed
  • Put together a couple of proposals for review by the membership
  • Pick a proposal that has consensus support and implement it

Interested Parties:

  • Lisa
  • Ed
  • Peter
  • <add your name here!>

Ideas:

I suggest that we bring over the two other white shelves and pick things up off the floor and demonstrate the advantage of having such organization. We could present the idea Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. We could present it as a fait accompli or as a propasition. ed

  • Need a must have / nice to have list

NICE TO HAVE:

1.At some point a safety shower would be nice. Be on the lookout for one removed from service. -ed

2.I think I can get used CO2 fire extinguishers They don't make a mess and work well on equipment - not so well on furniture, rugs, paper where water can do a great job (or more expensively, Dry Chemical). -ed

2.1 I have made contact with the extinguisher guy and hope to hear from him Friday. ed

3. I think we need better lighting at least available. Some people have brought in lamps already. ed

3.1 I have obtained two shop ligts for 40 watt fluorescent bulbs. They are devoid of lamps and have not been tested, but they appear new. They need two "S" hooks and two pieces of chain for one of them. ed

NEED TO HAVE:

1. A place for everything, that it owns. ed

1.1 A standard way of describing everything. ed

1.2 A beginning to an inventory system. If we need something, it would be nice to realize that it was here and under whose domain. ed

1.3 We have insurance. I don't know whether it is only liability or what. We need to know what is here so that if we have a break in, fire, flooding, etc we can provide some sort of accounting for losses. Individual property could be covered by home owner's insurance under "off premises property". ed

2. Areas of responsibility for the contents.- a shelf, desk, cabinet, etc. ed

2.1 An area for food, storage, Space accessories, etc. ed

3. Clear designation of what is available to do with as you wish. The implication is that if it does not have that designation, you need authorization and support from the owner. ed

4. We need some way to assign ownership or availability to everything in the space. ed

5. Remember clearly the true meaning of ASSUME is to make an ASS out of U and ME.ed

6. This place is fun. The only way it can be fun is for no one to infringe on other's rights and vice versa. ed

7. We need to have a filing system (all be it simple) for the invoices for things purchased. Gifts to the space are taxable to the space until it becomes a non-profit. We also need a better paper trail for things purchased from the space. We need to keep up with sales tax due and that paid. ed

8. An accurate diagram of the space. Feet and inches. Location of wall sockets, pipes, etc. This is a laborious process that can be done slowly. ed
