When we were first deciding on the nickname of the new Durham Makerspace, "The Everything Space" lead the pack.  In computer wildcards, this is represented by the two characters '*' (match anything) ' ' (space).  The proposed logos or shortcuts for this included hex:  #32#20, url: %32%20, c: 0x32 0x20, and so on.  In the same vain that the exclamation mark '!' character is called the "bang", in some areas of the country -- especially where a couple of the original members were from -- the asterisk '*' character is called the "splat".  Thus the "Everything Space" became the "* " (wildcard-space) became the "Splat Space".  So originally that early meeting the name was spelled with separated words.  However, within a week it was squashed together by folks into one word because of websites, applications, registrations and so forth.  Some of those original members liked the camel-case version, and thus was born "SplatSpace".  A few of the original members in emails and early correspondence and on the new wiki's were trying to introduce "Splat*Space" as the spelling to put the wildcard and logo in the middle of the name; however noone else used that form -- ever. What's In a Name
