Member Reports

Justin has been working on robotic kits, powered by Arduino nano, cardboard, 3d printed parts and hobby motors He is trying to scale them up from wooden dowels to PVC. He's upgraded his 3rd printer to print faster. He wants to sell them as a kit and create tutorial videos for robotic curriculem. https://tubelox.com/

Jay has been toying with this idea for a year: an air sterilization system to kill viruses. Using a 55 gal container, a fan, reflective material, and UV to sterilize air. He envisions it as an open hardware/public plan system. Ryan cites danger of UV-C, Justin referenced safer UV-C being made. Jay also considered infrared transmitters to see if light leaks were occuring, since UV isn't visible and invisible dangers are dangerous.

Scott shared a video in which people made a DIY box-fan HEPA filter.

The following links were posted to chat regarding the air purification discussion:

Lewis shared his method of recording meeting audio for later transcription. Blake asked about word-to-text -- Lewis will look into it. Lewis also sold his first set of plants (bee-balm) through his website. He packs the roots in wood chip, sawdust and bubble wrap mailers.

Shandon collects and builds mechanical keyboards and has been working on quick prototyping for PCB design using laser cutting. He has been trying to get an old Commodore64 to add to his retro computer collection.

Mark proxy-reported Andrew R had posted some cool content regarding concrete pavers. Mark says that Andrew essentially presenting a "money machine" for someone who wanted to "make pavers, mark em up, and sell them to suburbanites" youtube channel: homemade modern -- Blake expounded on the channel and its mission.

Blake got his first 3d printer, an Ender 3 ("this is after Ryan bought is 16th Ender 3"). He printed the test prints, and has had good experience with it so far. "Out of the box, it was pretty accurate." He wants to get an auto-leveler, and Ryan started a conversation about why he has one -- but did not use it for reasons he didn't get into. Lewis suggested that it may be cursed. Blake printed an expletive word in order to fulfill his friend's request to "print him a f*** to give." Blake also bought a couple of woodworking books - Workbench Storage and "Make Your Own Kitchen tools" by David Picciuto. On the subject of workbenches, Blake talks about how workbenches used by amateurs often get abused. He describes a frame around a torsion box covered with MDF/plywood that can be replaced as necessary. Blake also laser-etched into mahogany coasters that he made. He is making a 3/4 min video for Splatspace about this process. He also started an epoxy project.

ToDo Action Items

(Items carried forward from previous meetings, but not up for discussion this month. Recorded here so we don't forget about them.)

  • Pete Soper reports that the FSL Hobby Laser may not be fully functional, may be out of focus in one corner.
    • Justin will look at replacing the air assist hose and cleaning/realigning the mirrors if needed. After some research, Justin got it in focus, but had a hard time getting it to cut. He's found a forum.
  • Door and Gate system - remains delayed, requires "jiggle."
  • No updates on Training & Accountability (need volunteers)
    • Create a document with a list of tools, include people & doc links as we start making equipment training guides.
    • Identify and maintain (online) lists of SME's for each equipment or space.
  • Lewis has some progress on the member infosheet. Mark added some language.

Let's make this a permanent part of the TODO Action Items section of the meeting agenda.

New Business

  • Pete Soper's electronic export is still planned, but the space requires more organization before it can happen.
  • Blake's donated laptops are in place. Several are still available, talk to him if you want to use any for projects in the space.
  • Scott has made process wiring up zoned amplifiers to wire up multiple speakers in each room for music and paging system. This is on pause as Scott focuses on shelving and cleanup efforts.
  • The 2nd Splatspace Pizza Cleanup party was successful. The boneyard has been overhauled. A future cleanup party is planned for March 28.
  • Mark referenced a self-storage area that is close to Splatspace and mused over members sharing costs in order to rent space for excess stuff. He talks about how Splatspace shouldn't get in the business of renting space to members. Justin addressed how projects can get abandoned and how this can eat space quickly.
  • Justin will provide update about the SplatSpace floor plan he created for members to use for planning purposes and reference.
    • Justin volunteered his old Intel i3 system for use in the space for the Glowforge, possibly in the member signin/guest book/reservation system/information kiosk.
  • Discuss centralized, online file storage for SplatSpace documents and files.
  • Google Drive file storage system to implement:

- Ryan shared idea to separate SplatSpace files by access rights: Treasurer Google Drive Folder - contains all files only for officers. President Google Drive Folder - contains all files for general public. Vice President/Secretary - contains all fils for SplatSpace general members.

  • Web team update: wordpress is out. Blake, Andrew, Ryan, Justin, and others are still working on the new SplatSpace website. Blake shared about the web site updates.

- Showed the new draft he's been working on. - Blake will invite a small group to soon to do the last push (move the Wiki to Wordpress) and add Stripe portal, then publish the site and update the domain.

Officer Reports

President

Blake bought a pack of florescent lightbulbs and replaced a number of lights. He asked for documentation about any lights that weren't on so that the building manager can repair any bad ballasts. Bathrooms weren't being stocked because Mr. Russell thought nobody was using those bathrooms - that has been corrected. Blake signed us up for Microsoft Nonprofit and has been approved. This has benefits that are currently unknown but he will do more research. Regarding Slack, he mentioned that some of the names might confuse new members and should be renamed for simplicity's sake.

Vice-President

VP Justin found a site to get Windows keys for $15. He'll be using this for the laser cutting station. https://www.electronicfirst.com/?s=windows+oem this site seems to have cheap licenses. He will be bringing in a monitor for use in the space. He likes the idea of the particle board workbench advanced by Blake. He thinks that we have some material that can be used to stabilize these. Justin is also interested in managing some of the 3d printers in the space.

Mark thinks that we should welcome students, but not chase them because the student rate isn't as financially supportive. Mark suggests posting fliers on Foster street where there are condos and apartments with no workspace. Mark suggests that people need to pursue hanging up fliers repeatedly, but notes that turnover of places where posting is allowed becomes a problem. He also discussed the Motorco/Fullsteam area neighborhoods. Coco Cinnamon is another option.
